STARKVILLE, Miss.—Two faculty members in Mississippi State’s College of Business are being recognized for their publication of leading research in the prestigious journal Family Business Review.

Daniel T. Holt and Kincy Madison, faculty members in MSU’s Department of Management and Information Systems, along with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Franz Kellermanns, are winners of the 2018 Family Business Review Best Article Award. The researchers will be recognized for the award at the Family Firm Institute’s annual conference in October.

“Family Business Review is the premier academic journal devoted exclusively to family business studies,” said Jim Chrisman, head of MSU’s Department of Management and Information Systems. “Dr. Holt and Dr. Madison’s Best Article of the Year Award is an outstanding accomplishment and an important example of our efforts to maintain MSU’s leadership position in that research domain in terms of the quality, as well as the quantity of our work.”

The winning article, titled “Variance in Family Members’ Assessments: The importance of dispersion modeling in family firm research,” was published in the March 2017 issue of Family Business Review. The study examines the variability of family members’ perceptions and how researchers can account for those differences, providing a complete picture of family firms. “Kincy, Franz, and I are thrilled with this award,” Holt said. “We are especially thankful of the award’s sponsor, the Family Firm Institute, which is the world’s leading association that is dedicated to the advisers, educators and researchers who help family firms develop and grow. The support they provide to the journal, Family Business Review, and to scholars like ourselves, is so important as we try to address the challenges that family business owners confront.”

MSU’s entrepreneurship and family business research has received significant international attention. Last year, the Journal of Small Business Management ranked MSU No. 6 in the world for the impact of its entrepreneurship research. The university's Center for Family Enterprise Research has been listed among the best family business research centers in the world by Family Business Review, Chinese Economic Quarterly and the Handbook of Research on Family Business.
