The Family Business Bulletin is a quarterly publication of MSU’s COFER to provide insights, research findings, tips and resources tailored to the unique needs of family-owned businesses throughout the Magnolia State. Those interested in subscribing to the free newsletter can do so at its website, thefamilybusinessbulletin.com.
College of Business Dean Scott Grawe said MSU has expertise for anything business—family business, supply chain management, accounting, finance, marketing and more.
“We’re an educational institution with fantastic academic programs, but we’re also really focused on the lifelong learner, understanding that we have business professionals throughout many different industries who, in order to stay excellent at what they do, need to continue to learn,” Grawe said.
Professor Laura Marler, head of the Department of Management and Information Systems within the College of Business and the newsletter’s editor, said information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other state and county-level data is among information shared and analyzed through the new platform.
“We want to share practical insights from various sources, including MSU researchers, in an informative, succinct manner so people can have a helpful, easy-to-access resource that covers real issues they face in their businesses,” Marler said.
Key features of the newly launched bulletin include Small Business Development Center counseling success stories, Mississippi business patterns and tax trends, and topics like the value of succession planning in ensuring a business’s survival and profitability from one generation to the next.
“The Family Business Bulletin is about empowering Mississippi’s family businesses with practical insights and tools to succeed in an ever-changing business environment,” Marler added.
Professor Jim Chrisman, COFER director and the Julia Bennett Rouse Endowed Professor of Management, is an internationally recognized top-cited researcher and a prominent voice within the publication.
“I’ve been specializing in family business research for a number of years, and I focus on strategic issues, like performance and innovation, as well as how issues in family businesses may differ from other businesses,” Chrisman said.
“Part of the newsletter is to provide general information on the state of business in Mississippi. There is data available that oftentimes people do not know about or know how to find. We hope to make information available that would be particularly useful, and we would always be interested to hear about the issues people are interested in reading about so that we might address these relevant topics through The Family Business Bulletin,” he said.
