STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State University is hosting the inaugural Social Science Symposium “Where Passion Meets Action,” an immersive program May 19-22 designed for students interested in studying social sciences at the land-grant institution.

Designed for community college students and Bulldogs with undeclared majors, the four-day program offers insights into MSU career opportunities and academic pathways in criminology, social work or sociology. Engaging in real-world career exploration, students will connect with faculty and community partners to tackle social challenges including health, poverty, crime and family dynamics while learning how community engagement can drive solutions. The symposium also helps students strengthen college applications and résumés, with a scholarship opportunity available to offset costs.
“Given the variety of disciplines under social sciences, it may feel overwhelming to make decisions about majors and careers. The goal of this immersive four-day program is to make three social science disciplines more accessible, while also facilitating a chance for participants to become more familiar with the MSU Starkville campus and student resources, as well as community partners,” said Dana Dillard, social work program assistant professor and symposium organizer. “We are excited about this inaugural year and know it will be both impactful and fun.”
Registration for the symposium, which is limited to 20 participants, costs $250, but a $125 scholarship opportunity is available. Fees include four days of programming with MSU faculty, daily food vouchers and parking passes, transportation to and from site visits if outside Starkville city limits, one social event and a swag bag.
