STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State is taking strategic steps to conserve energy and reduce utility costs across campus with the launch of a comprehensive energy conservation program in partnership with Cenergistic, a national leader in energy and sustainability solutions.
“This program reflects Mississippi State’s commitment to using resources more efficiently and leveraging any savings to reinvest in what matters most—our people, our programs and a campus environment that best supports our academic priorities,” said Les Potts, MSU vice president for Finance and Administration.
Using smart technology, the energy program analyzes factors such as space utilization and occupancy patterns of campus buildings to identify opportunities for greater efficiency. The data collected is then prioritized to adjust energy use. For example, systems in buildings that are unoccupied for extended periods can be programmed to reduce energy consumption while maintaining safety and functionality rather than operating at full capacity when it’s not needed.
“Every building on campus functions differently, and our job is to ensure each one operates efficiently,” said Saunders Ramsey, executive director of Campus Services. “This program helps us fine-tune how we manage energy day to day — it’s a smart, practical way to use our resources more responsibly and better serve our campus community.”
Cenergistic has nearly 40 years of experience in partnering with educational institutions to help reduce energy consumption and reinvest those savings for academic success.
The launch of this program builds on MSU’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency. Within the last year, the university completed LED lighting upgrades and installed the largest on-campus solar facility in the Southeastern Conference, contributing to increased energy savings and advancing long-term energy consumption goals.
“At Campus Services, we are continually pursuing smarter ways to manage our energy use and improve how our facilities operate,” said Colton Ragan, director of utilities. “This Cenergistic partnership provides additional tools that complement the good work we’re already doing to build a resilient, more efficient campus.”
University faculty, staff and students can expect to learn more about this new energy conservation program and how they can support it as implementation begins over the next several weeks.
“Every member of our MSU community can play an incremental part in helping us use energy wisely,” Ragan said. “Small changes in our day-to-day habits can create significant impacts over time.”
