MSU hosts University of Oxford’s Horobin for Giles Lecture Series Sept. 10

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State will host a public lecture by University of Oxford Professor Simon Horobin on Sept. 10 as part of the prestigious William L. Giles Distinguished Lecture Series.
Horobin’s presentation “Narnia and the North: Norse Mythology in the Works of C.S. Lewis” begins at 6 p.m. in McComas Hall theater. The event is free and open to the public.
A professor of English Language and Literature at Oxford, Horobin also serves as chair of the faculty of English and is a leading scholar on the language’s history. His research and commentary have appeared across major national and international media outlets, including the BBC, NPR, The Economist and The New York Times.
Organized this year by MSU William L. Giles Distinguished Professors Christopher Snyder and Wes Schilling, the annual series brings world-class scholars, scientists, artists and leaders to campus to engage directly with the university community.
“I have attended a couple of other talks by Professor Horobin at Oxford,” Snyder said. “We have similar research approaches to the writings of Lewis and Tolkien, namely, identifying features from medieval language, literature, history and archaeology that likely influenced these two professional medievalists in their fiction and nonfiction.”
Created in 2006, the campus lecture series honors the legacy of former MSU President William L. Giles by fostering academic dialogue with influential figures.
