Harriet Laird

Harriet Laird has served as senior associate director in the MSU Office of Public Affairs since 2008. In her role, she works with Public Affairs Director Sid Salter to manage the areas of news, publications, new media and photography. She is charged with advancing the university's visibility through its people, programs and events, while also emphasizing the institution's mission of research, learning and service.

Prior to joining Mississippi State, Harriet was communications coordinator for Nissan North America's manufacturing facility in Canton, Miss., from 2006-08. For 13 years, she served as public relations director for Hinds Community College, Mississippi's largest two-year college. She held that same position at Copiah-Lincoln Community College from 1988-1992. Harriet also has experience as a daily newspaper reporter, classroom teacher, advertising copywriter and freelance magazine writer.

With writing at the core of her daily work and education, she holds a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's degree in public relations from the University of Southern Mississippi. Harriet's long connection with educational institutions in the Magnolia State dates back to the day her parents--both former college instructors--brought her home from the hospital as a newborn to their campus apartment. She grew up on the East Central Community College campus in Decatur, where she walked across the street from her parent's home to receive her associate of arts degree.

Harriet is an active member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, having served as a CASE District III board member and conference chair. She also is a member of the College Public Relations Association of Mississippi and the Public Relations Association of Mississippi, Golden Triangle Chapter. At MSU, she enjoys her participation with several campus organizations, especially those that enhance and advance diversity, opportunity and inclusion.
