Local MSU students honored in 'non-artist' classroom challenge

STARKVILLE, Miss.--Eighteen Mississippi State students are top winners of a unique non-artist art competition taking place in a university course.

Thirteen of the group are Mississippians, two represent Alabama and one each comes from Florida, Tennessee and Texas.

They were among nearly 100 students enrolled during the concluding spring semester in four sections of a history of arts and crafts course.

Taught by instructor Angie Latham, the course is part of the College of Education curriculum in its instructional systems and workforce development department.

In addition to learning about art through the ages, Latham's students were asked to create pieces in one of five categories: multimedia, personal choice, slip-cast models, stained glass and textiles. In recognition of the great 19th-century textile artist William Morris, top winners in textiles received the William Morris Award.

All recently were displayed during the final week of classes in a departmental exhibition. The first-place winners included (by category and hometown):
