A national nonprofit news analysis and commentary website, The Conversation publishes faculty-written articles for a general audience under a Creative Commons license, which allows other news sources around the world to republish the content after author approval.

Since 2018, MSU faculty have published more than 125 articles on The Conversation—garnering more than 7.5 million views—with many republished by various media including The Washington Post, CNN, The Guardian, IFLScience, Time, PBS and many more.

Data shows that 55% of contributors to The Conversation are contacted by media for radio, print and television interviews, while 24% see an increase of citations for scholarly articles. Collaboration with other researchers also is a major outcome.

Recognizing the importance of sharing research with a wide variety of audiences, MSU’s Office of Research and Economic Development provides an annual $500 incentive for each MSU faculty member whose work is published in this outlet.

For more information, faculty should contact MSU Office of Public Affairs News Editor Allison Matthews, amatthews@opa.msstate.edu, or OPA Senior Associate Director Harriet Laird, hlaird@opa.msstate.edu, to discuss article ideas and the pitching process. Funding for MSU’s partnership with The Conversation comes from ORED, Office of Public Affairs and Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President.
