STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State is honoring the legacy of the late Martin Luther King Jr. with a series of events and activities for the campus and broader community.

The university kicks off its annual MLK Jr. Day observance with a new Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Dinner for invited guests, sponsored by the Division of Access, Opportunity and Success. This formal event at The Mill Conference Center features live performances and opportunities to engage with Starkville and MSU leaders.

On Monday [Jan. 20], Community Breakfast and Dialogues will take place at the First Baptist Church Warehouse from 8:30-10:30 a.m. This change of venue from previous years was initiated through collaborative involvement between MSU’s Interfaith Council and several local churches.

Also Monday [Jan. 20], a chapel service will be held at 5 p.m. in the Chapel of Memories. Sponsored by the Center for Student Activities, Division of Student Affairs, Holmes Cultural Diversity Center, and Office of Student Leadership and Community Engagement, this service focuses on renewing the commitment to building a society rooted in love, compassion and mutual respect.

On Thursday [Jan. 23], the Holmes Cultural Diversity Center will sponsor “What Will Your Legacy Be,” noon-2 p.m., a celebratory experience in the Colvard Student Union that encourages students to envision their legacy through creative artwork.

The observance closes with presentations for MLK essay and art contest winners, sponsored by the Office of Pre-College and Opportunity Programs. Middle and high school students from across the area were encouraged to submit written work or artwork reflecting Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

Students began commemorative events this past week with the traditional Days of Service activities, spanning three days of volunteering at sites across the community for service-learning projects.
